Truffle fungi
Fungi enjoy the privilege of being a separate kingdom. There are numerous fungi that are available in the world. Truffle fungi are one of the innumerable species of fungi. They are in fact one of the edible fungi like mushroom that are very famous. Truffles are the ascocarps or fruiting bodies of the mycorrhizal ascomycetous fungi. The Truffle fungi are very different from normal mushrooms. They occur above the ground level resembling small clouds of dirt or small pebbles and are subterranean.
Truffle fungi are usually 1 or 2 centimeters across. These fungi can be harvested with the help of a garden rake. There are certain mammals such as dogs and pigs that can be used to sniff out regions that are rich in these fungi. There are other animals that are also used for sniffing out regions rich in truffle fungi. Goats are used in Sardinia and bear cubs are used in Russia. Possessing a good swine or a truffle sniffing dog can be a valuable asset as truffle fungi are very expensive and also very delicious.
Truffle fungi emit odor of mammalian steroids. The saliva as well as breathe of boars serves to triumph over the young female pigs sexual inhibitions. This exhibits the lust as well as talent for truffle hunting. The truffle role in humans is not established clearly. However, the same substance can be felt in the perspiration of men in the underarm and in women’s urine. The substance felt is androstenol and this chemical is put in few cosmetics to attract mating partners. However, the truffle spores are not dependant on wind dispersals. Instead numerous truffle eating animals such as rodents, pigs, deer, slugs and insects spread it. These spores pass through from these unscathed animals to the digestive tract.
Truffles are one of the most sought after species that are also valuable. These truffles belong to the fungal tuber and are found in the underground. They are in the closest proximity to trees. The white truffle is known as the diamond of Italy and is quite aromatic, flavorful and is hard to find. This makes this type of truffle expensive. It is stated that an expensive truffle was sold in 2006 in Hong Kong. To ensure that you are eating authentic it is best that you can stay far from jarred truffles as well as truffle infused oils.
